SLABS WITHOUT STEEL AND 150’ JOINT SPACING
Cypress, CA – September 7, 2004 — Shrinkage-Compensating Cement has been used for over 40 years to produce slabs with 150 feet or more between joints. It has traditionally required the use of rebar to restrain the expansion of the slab. Newly developed System-K™ uses small synthetic fibers to restrain the expansion. Significant cost savings can be achieved since the use of fibers eliminates the need for rebar. Additional costs are saved from the elimination of saw-cutting and joint filling.
ACI 223-98 the Standard Practice for the Use of Shrinkage-Compensating Concrete explains that, “…expansion will induce tension in the reinforcement and compression in the concrete. On subsequent drying, the shrinkage merely relieves the expansive strains…” and goes on to say that “…contraction joints are eliminated…”
System-K also offers the following benefits – virtually no curling, reduced permeability, higher sulfate resistance, and greater abrasion resistance. There is also very little spalling because non-existent cracks and joints cannot spall.
Floor Contractor, Perry Thessen who worked on the Sofa Express job in Tennessee said, “There’s no comparison between a shrinkage-compensating concrete floor and a conventional floor, it’s like day and night. Conventional floors have joints that will curl and crack, but a shrinkage-compensating concrete floor doesn’t have those problems.”…“Working with the System-K concrete was just like working with conventional concrete. The fibers weren’t evident as they usually are in other fiber-reinforced concrete.”
Maintenance of the concrete is dramatically reduced so owners will save money on the life of the project in addition to the money saved during initial construction, making it a win-win situation.
