An East Coast city used Rapid Set® DOT Concrete Mix to rehabilitate a structural component rather than replace an entire bridge. SW Construction Enterprises used several techniques to promote concrete workability in temperatures ranging from below freezing to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
NCDOT performed a full rehab on the bascule bridge. The contractor removed and replaced the concrete surrounding the hinges and anchored the bearing plates that support the drawbridge. Using DOT Concrete Mix allowed the contractor to complete the work at night and have all bridge lanes opened to traffic on weekends and between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.
Pulling out and disposing of the existing steel troughs previously used as a washout room would be costly. But leaving them in would have compromised the cleanliness of the space. DOT Concrete Mix with integral corrosion inhibitor was used to fill in the troughs.
70,000 square feet of partial depth bridge deck repairs were performed with DOT Concrete Mix. Up to two lanes were closed at night and then reopened in the morning.
