Lewis & Clark Bridge
Project Profile:
LEWIS AND CLARK BRIDGE DECK OVERLAY

Project: Lewis & Clark Bridge
Location: Oregon & Washington
Date: April 2004
Engineer: Kevin Miller
Concrete Contractor: Max J. Kuney
Concrete Producer: George L. Throop
Suppliers: Dow Reichhold, CTS Cement
Product Used: Rapid Set® Latex Modified Concrete (RSLMC)

After 18 months of partial closures, the Lewis & Clark Bridge reopened a full six months ahead of schedule in June 2004. The WSDOT (Washington State Department of Transportation) awarded Max J. Kuney a $55,000 bonus for using fewer full weekend closures than allotted. The use of high performance RSLMC helped move the project ahead of schedule and under budget.

The concrete was placed out of mobile mix equipment, which batched the concrete continuously as it was placed. This allowed the contractor to start and stop whenever necessary without wasting any material.

Built in 1929, 75 years of use took its toll on this bridge, and an extensive rehabilitation of this historic landmark was needed. The repairs are planned to extend the life of the bridge another 25 years.
