Project Profile:
CHICAGO MIDWAY AIRPORT CONCRETE PAVEMENT REPLACEMENT
Project: Chicago Midway Airport
Where: Chicago, Illinois
When: August 1991
Engineer: Chicago Department of Public Works
Concrete Contractor: K-Five Construction Corporation
Concrete Producer: All American Concrete, Action Concrete
Product Used: Rapid Set® Cement
Repairs required for Midway Airport's “Bullseye” section (the area where the two main runways intersect) included four 12” full-depth sections, 100 ft. x 12 ft.. Chicago Department of Public Works specifications called for a compressive strength of 3000 psi in four hours.
Facing liquidated damages of $10,000 per hour, Rapid Set® Cement was used to ensure that the concrete would meet the required structural strength before deadline. The runaway repair time was just 8 hours per night. George Schwandt, P.E., Chief Airport Engineer of the Chicago Department of Public Works says, “The pour went very wellso well in fact, that the first night, the concrete strength was greater than 3000 psi in one hour!”
Midway Airport opened on time each morning. Rapid Set® Cement strengths met or exceeded 3000 psi in two hours or less at a 5” slump. There were no delays and no penalties.
